Art Appreciation, "The Museum Experience" MOD2

The African and the Asian exhibits were located on the second floor. These could be easily accessed via the elevator located right in the middle of the two exibits on the ground floor. The African art gallery was most eccentric with a wide array of masks, sculputures and artifacts. Most of these artifacts come from sub-Saharan Africa and are dated mainly from the mid 19th to mid 20th century. I speculate the reasoning why there are no items dating back farther than 200 years is because all of the African artwork seems to be primarily wood based. I wondered if this was just a cultural preference or if metalworking was an artisanship that never took hold in southern Africa until more modern times.
